For parents and caregivers

What children learn when they cook as a family

Cooking together is much more than making a snack: it is one of the most complete learning activities you can do at home. Measuring, waiting, following steps in order and working as a team are skills children use every day. Here is how to make the most of this recipe to learn together.

How to do it together

Read the whole recipe before you start and share the tasks according to age: little ones can wash the blueberries, add ingredients and mix; older kids can measure and shape the balls. An adult always handles the oven and supervises the whole process.

What they are learning

Measuring grams, cups and spoonfuls is real-life math. Following the steps in order trains planning and working memory. Waiting for the dough to chill and the cookies to bake is an exercise in patience and self-control. And at the end, sharing what they made builds their self-confidence.

Ideas to keep going at home

  • Ask them to read each step out loud before doing it.
  • Double the recipe and work out the new amounts together.
  • Use the waiting time to tidy up and clean as a team.
  • Take a photo of your cookies and share it with us on Instagram.

Connection to the book

In "Tarro de Galletas", Ina wants to learn to play the guitar and discovers that selling cookies can help her save the money she needs. After baking, talk about it: what would you do with your cookies? Would you share them, give them as gifts or sell them like Ina?
